The Bodyworks Practice brings you its Dermaroller treatment, run by our aesthetic nurse with over 20 years experience as an NHS nurse and over 3 years practising as an aesthetic nurse
How does it work?
A dermaroller is a device with hundreds of small medical grade microneedles arranged around a medical roller device. As the dermaroller is passed across the skin it causes small micro punctures in the skin surface. This controlled damage to the skin surface is not deep enough to elicit a scarring response however it will cause the body to have a milder healing response. The nearby tissue is broken down and new elastin and collagen are formed. This way scarring, lines, wrinkles and pigmentation are all gently removed, being replace over time with new scar free skin.
How quickly will I notice an effect?
After the treatment the body immediately starts to naturally regenerate and repair the skin, working below the surface in the dermis so it can take up to six weeks before visible signs of regeneration and repair are seen.
Is it painful?
No- but it can be uncomfortable. We always numb the skin with local anaesthetic cream which takes about 30 minutes to work.
How long will the dermaroller treatment last?
The results from a dermaroller treatment are permanent. As it is a repair of the skin it does not revert after a given time period. Dermaroller for fine lines and wrinkles will improve the skin, however it will not stop skin ageing and new lines forming.
Post-treatment care with dermaroller
After your dermaroller treatment we will put on a barrier repair cream to encourage the repair of the skin. You will also be given a sunscreen to wear between treatments. This helps protect the skin and provide optimum conditions for the skin to repair itself.
What areas can be treated with dermaroller?
The most common area to be treated with the dermaroller is the face for acne scars. It is an excellent treatment for fine lines and wrinkles on the face. the neck, decolletage and the backs of hands.
We also treat stretch marks with the dermaroller.
Are there any side-effects?
The treatment is safe, effective and natural. If you are prone to cold sores this can bring on an out-break but we would always prescribe a preventative treatment.
Down-time?
Yes a couple of hours-just because you do look sun-burnt. Generally this subsides after 2 hours and disappears by the next day. Two weeks of a Vitamin C serum are needed before treatment and six weeks of using sunblock after the treatment.
Who would benefit from it?
Dermaroller appears to be of significant benefit in improving skin tone and evening out colour. It can improve fine lines and shrink pores. Stretch marks have been improved as has scar tissue.
How many do I need?
Generally three sessions are recommended six weeks apart. However one treatment may make a significant improvement although with acne scarring five treatments is more realistic.
